StaticBase: I built my own static site starter

While building websites, I kept running into the same issue: creating and maintaining static sites should be simple, but the setup often becomes heavy.

On the previous version of this website, I used Next.js. It is powerful, but for my use case it felt too complex. Too many moving parts for a website that mostly needs to be fast, simple, and easy to maintain.

I wanted a smaller codebase that I can understand end to end.

The pain point

For static websites, I wanted this workflow:

  • Write content quickly
  • Reuse templates across pages
  • Generate pages automatically
  • Keep the project structure clean
  • Deploy without framework overhead

Instead, I often spent too much time managing setup details.

Turning this website workflow into a reusable tool

During development of this website, I already created scripts and patterns that made things faster for me.

Then I decided to turn that process into a reusable app so I can spin up new static websites faster whenever needed.

That app is StaticBase.

Core features in StaticBase

  • File-based content with Markdown frontmatter
  • Reusable HTML templates for pages and sections
  • Automatic generation of listing pages and detail pages
  • Clean routing output for static deployment
  • Lightweight setup focused on simplicity and speed
  • Easy to extend when a project needs custom logic

StaticBase is a bash script that generates a clean, modern website with index, about, contact pages, and a full blog system powered by:

  • Tailwind CSS - Utility-first styling
  • Alpine.js - Lightweight interactivity
  • Vite - Lightning-fast builds
  • Markdown - Easy content management

Why StaticBase?

  • Simple - No complex frameworks
  • Modern - Latest tools (Vite, Tailwind, Alpine)
  • Fast - Lightning-fast development and builds
  • Flexible - Easy to customize and extend
  • Production-Ready - Optimized builds
  • AI-Friendly - Includes AGENTS.md for AI assistants

Why I built it

I did not build StaticBase to replace every framework.

I built it because sometimes the best tool is a simpler one that matches the real scope of the project.

For personal websites, landing pages, docs-style sites, and content-heavy static projects, this approach gives me more control with less complexity.
